The police officers left the checkpoint, the locals were satisfied

Border Controls Lifted at Dragonja Crossing Following Two-and-a-Half Year Period

Slovenian authorities lifted extraordinary border controls at the Dragonja crossing shortly before midnight on Tuesday. Police conducted routine checks on vehicles in the minutes leading up to the hour, and upon the stroke of midnight, control houses were secured, signaling the end of the prolonged border security operation. The decision to remove the controls was made by the Slovenian government yesterday afternoon.

Police personnel swiftly vacated the border control points, completing the process precisely at midnight. This marks a significant change following over two and a half years of heightened border scrutiny for individuals crossing between Croatia and Hungary into Slovenia. Currently, individuals passing through the Dragonja border crossing no longer require the presentation of personal documentation.

The move has been met with positive feedback, particularly from frequent travelers. Mateja Grbec, a Slovenian resident living in Croatia, expressed her satisfaction, stating, “That was a pleasant news. Although, I must honestly say, that in the last two years, when the border was in place, I have crossed it several times a day, even several times a day.”

The lifting of controls represents a return to standard border procedures at the Dragonja crossing.
