Zoo Lioness Displays Aggression Towards Newborn Puppy

At the zoo, a unique situation arose following the birth of a puppy on February 2nd to mother Nhi Linh. However, immediate concerns were raised regarding the interaction between the mother and the newborn. Zoo officials reported that the lioness exhibited aggressive behavior towards the puppy, necessitating a separation.

According to the zoo’s animal care director, this was the first time the mother lioness had given birth and she had no prior contact with other puppies. Initial hopes were for a gradual acclimation, but the lioness’s reaction proved problematic. The mother displayed disruptive behaviors, including kicking with her legs, waving her snout, and throwing hay.

“The behavior of Nhi Linh showed us that she was not yet ready for a safe division of space with the puppy,” stated the director. Zoo staff required permission to incorporate social media and third-party content.
