The oldest Slovenian has passed away

Marija Žekš, as reported by Vestnik, died at the General Hospital in Murska Sobota. She had spent nearly fifteen years residing at the Ljutomer Senior Citizens’ Home. On August 12th of last year, she celebrated her 109th birthday with her daughter Olga, granddaughter Romana, and fellow residents of the DSO.

Born in 1916 in Drevenik pod Bočem, Marija spent her formative years in Maribor. Following her marriage, she relocated to Prekmurje and retired in 1968. Throughout her life, she was recognized as the oldest Slovenian woman still alive.

As of July 22nd, 2024, local media highlighted another remarkable individual, Julijana Zakrajšek from Opalkovo in Velika Lašč, who had reached the impressive age of 111 years prior to her burial. Her life’s journey was filled with experience and she was truly a remarkable figure. It was clear that her longevity was a source of great interest and admiration.

She represented a significant chapter in Slovenian history, and her passing marks the end of an era. The community mourned the loss of this cherished member, remembering her as the oldest Slovenian woman.
