NEK explained that the plant utilizes a third cooling circuit when the volume of the Sava River is low and the water temperature is high.
This operational mode, while necessary for maintaining safety protocols, consequently impacts the thermal dynamics of the river itself. The diminished flow in the Sava River is attributed to recent periods of low rainfall. While the current river temperature is noted as slightly lower than the peaks recorded during recent heatwaves, the combination of low flow and warmer water remains a concern.
Plant operators have issued a cautionary statement regarding potential future limitations. They indicated that the operational status could be subject to modifications if environmental restrictions pertaining to the Sava River are reached. In the most extreme scenarios, this could necessitate a reduction in the plant’s output power or, potentially, a gradual shutdown.
