In Slovakia, panic over large insect, similar to a hornet

Increase in Large Insects Reported in Southern Slovakia

Residents of southern Slovakia have reported a recent rise in sightings of large insects, leading to increased complaints to local authorities. The city administration, as reported by tnlive.sk, attributed the sightings to the presence of the giant hornet, a species recognized as one of the largest hornets in Europe. Specimens can reach lengths of up to 4.5 centimeters.

Despite its size and distinctive black-and-yellow coloration, which often leads to mistaken identification as a typical hornet, experts confirm the insect is not inherently aggressive. Adult giant hornets are entirely reliant on nectar and pollen sources, posing no threat to humans, other insects, or outdoor food sources. The species is legally protected in Slovakia and is classified as an endangered species with significant value for nature conservation.

Researchers are investigating a potential link between the hornet’s expanding range northward, including into Europe, and the effects of climate change. Further study is ongoing to understand the population dynamics of this large insect within Slovakia.
