The constitutional amendment was passed in the parliament with 135 votes in favor, 50 against and six abstentions. According to the Hungarian law, such measures can be passed with a two-thirds majority, without the need for a referendum. Péter Magyar has already claimed during the election campaign that the possibility of an unlimited mandate can lead to the concentration of power, citing as an example his predecessor Viktor Orbán, who was criticized for constantly adapting the Hungarian political system in order to maintain control over the authorities.
The Fidesz party of Orbán has, meanwhile, opposed the limitation of the mandate, arguing that the measure could interfere with the will of the people. Viktor Orbán could still return to power, according to AFP, if the limitation of the mandate were to be repealed in the future with a new constitutional amendment. Viktor Orban FOT: AP
