The former Moravian mayor Balažic is no longer in custody

The legal proceedings involving Milan Balažic have centered on allegations of corruption offenses, which culminated in his resignation as mayor of Moravče on June 12. According to the municipality, Balažic submitted his resignation citing “circumstances related to the criminal proceedings against him.”

The Specialized State Prosecutor (SGP) subsequently filed an appeal against Balažic, arguing grounds of repetition and collusion, specifically citing the danger of potential witness influence. When the investigative judge disagreed with the SGP’s recommendation, the non-judicial senate of the district court ultimately ruled on the matter, ordering a period of 30-day detention.

However, Milan Balažic’s legal counsel, Milan Krstić, reported that the court’s senate did not extend the period of detention during the current week, stating that the original justification for continued restraint was no longer present. The initial ruling established the initial period of detention, but the subsequent decision marked a change in the legal status. The court’s decision regarding the extension of detention, particularly whether it could be made longer, was therefore curtailed by the lack of ongoing necessity cited by the defense.

These actions underscore the ongoing judicial scrutiny surrounding the former mayor and the corruption charges against him.
