The Czech police detained and then released a Russian bishop on suspicion of drugs

Czech Police Investigate Bishop Alfeyev Over Substance Discovery

Police in the Czech Republic detained Bishop Grigory Alfeyev on Sunday at a spa resort in the west of the country, a location frequented by Russian visitors. A white powdery substance was discovered in the trunk of his vehicle, triggering an investigation following an anonymous report alleging the transportation of drug and psychotropic substances. According to reports from The Guardian, Bishop Alfeyev stated that subsequent testing confirmed the substance was a prohibited material.

He maintains he is the victim of a conspiracy and is unaware of how the substance entered his car. The Russian Foreign Ministry has characterized the arrest as an “intentionally orchestrated provocation,” demanding a discussion with the Czech diplomat stationed in Moscow regarding the situation. Bishop Alfeyev leads the Russian Orthodox community in Karlovy Vary, a significant part of the broader Russian diaspora in the region.

Previously, Bishop Alfeyev has voiced criticism of the Russian government’s policies concerning Chechnya. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the substance within the Czech Republic.
