‘The abolition of NPZs at enrollment would be a step backwards for all students’

Slovenian Schools to Face Flag Inspection, Test Enrollment Debate Intensifies

Ljubljana – Starting September 1st, inspectors will conduct a review of all Slovenian schools to ensure the presence of the national flag, according to Education Minister Borut Rončevič. This announcement follows recent statements by the state secretary regarding a potential reconsideration of a two-year-old decision. The proposed policy would examine the results of the national mathematics and Slovenian tests when determining secondary school enrollment.

This move has drawn significant reaction, particularly from within the education sector. Mojca Mihelič, president of the Association of School Heads, expressed surprise at the minister’s announcement. She highlighted the association’s longstanding efforts to increase the role of National Pedagogical Institutes (NPZs) in pupils’ educational pathways.

“We have been striving for a broader national test for a long time, either school heads or our association members,” Mihelič stated. The potential abolition of the test-based enrollment system remains a contentious issue. Rončevič’s administration is currently evaluating the feasibility of this change, sparking debate about the future of standardized testing within the Slovenian education system.

The inspectorate’s role in verifying flag displays adds another layer to this evolving situation, with the minister signaling a shift in policy direction.
