The 82-year-old fell asleep in the sun, now she is fighting for her life

Betty-Lou Summer was at a neighborhood pool on June 11th, intending to spend the day relaxing after her recent retirement. While sunbathing, she reportedly fell asleep and subsequently became unresponsive. According to reports from ABC15 Arizona, bystanders noticed that she was not regaining consciousness and alerted emergency medical services.

Responders immediately moved her to a shaded area and began cooling her body with wet towels. Upon arrival at the hospital, her condition was deemed critical. Medical professionals diagnosed her with severe heat stroke and hypovolemic shock, complications that led to kidney failure.

Furthermore, her body exhibited extensive burns and blisters. Her daughter, Michelle Gabbert, who is a medical doctor, clarified that the burns were not attributed to sun exposure. Instead, she stated that the injuries resulted from contact with hot metal surfaces within the pool area.

“All the places where her skin touched the metal chair were burned,” Gabbert reported. The incident highlights the multiple dangers present in such environments. While the initial collapse was linked to heat-related medical emergencies, the physical trauma sustained by Ms.

Summer stemmed from contact burns with superheated metal fixtures at the facility. Emergency personnel provided initial care, but the severity of the heat-related illness combined with the physical burns required intensive hospital treatment.
