According to data from the German news agency dpa, the average daily value of stolen fuel reached £194,000 (approximately €226,000) across 8,359 petrol stations throughout the UK. The analysis of incidents reveals varied trends among offenders.
For first-time offenders, the number of incidents involving stolen fuel has increased by 23 percent. Among repeat offenders, the volume of stolen fuel has risen by 26 percent, while the frequency of these incidents increased by 17 percent. This data is based on a representative sample comprising 550 petrol stations.
The scope of the investigation accounts for multiple scenarios, including instances where drivers depart without attempting payment, as well as cases where customers fill vehicles and subsequently claim they lack the means to pay. The consistent average value reported remains £194,000, highlighting the financial impact of these thefts. The substantial percentage increases across all categories—first-time theft, and repeated incidents of stolen fuel—indicate a notable trend in fuel security challenges across the UK network.
