Economic Council Voices Concerns Over Proposed “Emergency” Law

Members of the Economic and Social Council (ESS) have expressed reservations regarding a recently proposed “emergency” law aimed at fostering Slovenia’s development, submitted by representatives from three parliamentary parties. In a public letter, the members argued the law’s title is misleading, stating it doesn’t constitute an emergency measure intended to address or alleviate a crisis. Instead, the ESS members contend the legislation primarily serves to benefit employers and capital, potentially disrupting established principles of the social state.

The proposed measures, including reductions in Value Added Tax (VAT) on basic foodstuffs and initiatives to lower energy costs, are described as familiar proposals previously advocated by employer groups. The letter highlights a lack of urgency in the proposed legislation, suggesting the measures represent a standard, rather than an emergency, response. The ESS members are urging a more thorough examination of the law’s potential impact.

The government is currently in the process of finalizing an agreement with the unions following the submission of the proposed emergency law. —
