Swimming in our rivers: is the water quality there really worse?

European Bathing Water Quality Shows Variation Across Regions

Recent assessments by the European Quality of Bathing Water Assessment Agency reveal significant differences in water bathing quality across Europe. By 2025, Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Greece are projected to demonstrate the highest bathing water quality levels, according to the agency’s data. Notably, coastal bathing waters continue to receive the most favorable evaluations based on water type.

Last year, 88 percent of coastal bathing waters were classified as “excellent,” compared to 78 percent for inland bathing waters. However, rivers present a key area of concern. Monitoring indicates a slight decline in river water quality over the past year.

At the European Union level, only 46.5 percent of rivers included in quality control assessments meet “excellent” standards, while 30 percent achieve a “good” rating. A further seven percent receive a “satisfactory” classification. These findings highlight the need for continued efforts to improve water quality across various European waterways.

The assessment underscores the importance of ongoing monitoring and management strategies to ensure optimal bathing water quality for all.
