Extensive Whale Cemetery Discovered in Deep Ocean Trench
Scientists have identified a remarkably large and deep whale cemetery within the Diamantina Fracture Zone, a region of the Southern Ocean. The discovery, detailed by CNN, reveals a concentration of whale remains at depths ranging from 5,000 to 7,000 meters. Spanning approximately 1,200 kilometers, the area has yielded a significant collection of both modern and ancient whale remains.
During 32 dives utilizing a research submersible, researchers documented 485 fossil sites and identified five recent whale remains. Initial estimates suggest that over ten million whale remains may be present within the trench, substantially exceeding the quantities found in previously recognized comparable locations. The majority of the discovered bones belong to beaked whales, a group of deep-sea mammals that remain largely enigmatic to scientists.
