Svoboda, SD and Levica are hunting for signatures for a referendum on the emergency law

Movement for Freedom Reacts to Union Plans for Subsequent Referendum on Intervention Law

The Executive Board of the Movement for Freedom has acknowledged the announcement by trade union centrals that they intend to collect signatures for a process leading to a potential subsequent referendum on the recently adopted omnibus intervention law. The law, passed on Monday, was championed by the NSi, SLS, Fokus, and the Democrats and the Truth, with support from the SDS. Proponents argue the legislation addresses the coming economic crisis and promotes Slovenia’s development.

However, trade unions and opposition parties criticize the law’s interference with the foundations of the social state. Concerns have been raised regarding the law’s passage, with Freedom party representatives stating that the process lacked sufficient debate. They assert that many stakeholders were denied the opportunity to discuss potential solutions.

The party maintains that the law significantly altered existing legislation without allowing for broad consultation. The trade unions’ initiative seeks to trigger a public vote on the law, reflecting ongoing disagreements about its impact on social welfare and economic policy. The gathering of signatures will be a key step in initiating the process for a potential referendum.
