Last week marked a significant turning point for two individuals, profoundly altering their lives through two successful lung transplants. Dr. Matevž Harlander, the head of the Pulmonary Disease and Allergy Department at the Ljubljana University Clinic, recounted the events.
“The initial patient didn’t experience a prolonged wait; I’m estimating around six months,” he stated. “The second patient faced a considerably longer period, approximately two years, due to her specific blood group and the size of her lungs, which were crucial for the transplant.”
The lungs for the first transplant were officially confirmed just the day before the operation. However, the second patient’s lungs were identified during the preparatory stages for the first procedure.
“For these two transplants, we required a substantial increase in resources, necessitating two beds within the intensive care unit,” explained Dr. Tomaž Štupnik, leading the surgical team at the Ljubljana Thoracic Surgery Clinic. Slovenia’s participation in the Eurotransplant organization is vital, as donated lungs frequently arrive via air transport.
This system ensures a swift response to critical needs, ultimately saving two lives through these remarkable transplant interventions.
