Sick leave: will we have to go to the clinic for every flu or migraine?

Slovenian Health Insurance Fund Updates Sick Leave Policy

The Slovenian Health Insurance Fund (ZZZS) has implemented a revised policy regarding remote sick leave applications. Effective immediately, individuals can utilize remote sick leave options. However, for extended absences, a visit to the clinic is now required on the fourth day of sick leave.

The change comes amid concerns regarding potential abuse of the system. Family doctor Sašo Rebolj, at the Kamnik Health Center, expressed reservations, stating, “A certain percentage of people have certainly abused their sick leave, but I wonder how the personal doctor will be able to find out about those who want to abuse it.”

Challenges in verifying certain medical conditions are also being noted. Dr.

Rebolj highlighted the difficulty in definitively confirming diagnoses for ailments such as headaches, back pain, and diarrhea, stating, “It’s very hard to be an expert in the true sense of the word.”

Similarly, pediatrician Maša Babič from the Ljubljana Health Center-Center emphasized the importance of trust within the patient-doctor relationship. “The fundamental thing in the relationship between parents and doctors is trust. We have to trust the parent that we can trust the doctor.” The new rule mandates a clinic visit for longer periods of sick leave, aiming to ensure appropriate medical oversight.
