Second May: a day off, but not for everyone

Essential Services Continue Operations Despite Public Holiday

For many, today marked a day off from work and routine. However, a significant number of individuals continue to work, maintaining essential services across various sectors. These include journalists, medical professionals, firefighters, police officers, restaurant operators, and smaller business owners.

Despite the public holiday, a noticeable increase in traffic volume has been observed, attributed to the reduced number of commuters. Sales are largely focused on basic necessities, with many individuals purchasing items such as bread and milk. Some merchants are also reporting sales of meat.

“More traffic is because the big ones are not working. They mostly buy bread, milk is basic food. Some even sell meat,” stated Himzaga Murić, a salesman.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Ljubljana Traffic Police Station, maintain standard operations. “Like any other working day, we are at work, we have to provide the same services. We hope it is as peaceful as usual today,” explained Tine Prevec, shift leader.

Police officers are accustomed to working during holidays, mirroring typical weekend shifts. While primarily focused on routine tasks, they are prepared for potential emergencies. “Everything is going on.

The problem is that there are fewer people at work, but there is still work to be done. The day is peaceful,” added Prevec. These individuals are committed to ensuring continued service on this day.
