Property tax: Hungary’s ally follows Orban’s lead

Significant Shifts Following Hungarian Election as Key Figure Redistributes Assets

Following the recent elections, significant changes are underway in Hungary, marked by a notable shift in power and asset distribution. Balázs Gyule, a prominent advertising mogul and a major beneficiary of Viktor Orbán’s administration, has made a decisive move, transferring his company and a portion of his property to the state. Gyule’s previously utilized “blue posters,” historically central to state-led propaganda campaigns, are now unused.

Furthermore, the flow of public contracts, long directed towards a select group of loyal businesses, has been curtailed following the electoral victory. The new government is implementing a 1% annual tax on property valued at over 1 billion forints (approximately 2.3 million euros). As outlined by Peter Magyar, this tax will encompass a broad range of assets, including his property, ownership shares, international property holdings, and luxury items.

The taxation will be determined by factors such as property value, share quantity, the presence of foreign residents, and the number of occupants within the property. This redistribution represents a fundamental change in Hungary’s economic landscape, signaling a departure from the previous administration’s approach to public resources and contracting.
