Pogačar won with a broken wheel frame

Ten kilometers from the finish of the grueling race, Tadej Pogačar launched a decisive assault, initially dominating the challenge posed by Mathieu van der Poel. He subsequently surpassed Thomas Pidcock, securing the highly anticipated and long-awaited victory. However, the outcome could have dramatically altered had a significant incident occurred earlier.

At the moment of the fall, Pogačar’s bicycle frame suffered a critical break. The situation was further complicated by a technical issue revealed by his mechanic, Boštjan Kavčnik, who spoke to Delo. Kavčnik explained that a disc rubbing against the brake surface was the cause of the accident.

“If I had been aware of this, I wouldn’t have reacted as I did,” he stated. Despite the near-disaster and the damaged frame, Pogačar ultimately prevailed, marking his first triumph in San Remo. It’s now clear that the Slovenian champion experienced a fortunate turn of events, allowing him to claim the coveted victory after a challenging race.

This outcome underscores the element of luck involved in achieving such a significant accomplishment.
