Navigational difficulties on the Soča: The municipalities in dispute over permits

Slovenian Municipalities Remain at Odds Over Soča River Navigation Permits

Kobarid, Slovenia – Ongoing complications are hindering the implementation of a unified permit system for navigation on the Soča River. The initiative, which proposes a €15 fee per individual, has sparked a dispute between municipalities in the Posočje region. The agreement to establish the unified permit was initially signed by Kobarid municipal councilor Branko Velišček, alongside the mayors of Bovec and Tolmin.

This agreement aimed to standardize navigation access along the river. However, Kobarid Mayor Marko Matajurc subsequently halted the permit’s implementation. Councilor Velišček emphasized that no single individual can represent the entire region, highlighting the complexities of the situation.

The disagreement centers around the operational details and potential impact of the permit on local navigation activities. The introduction of the unified permit was intended to streamline access and ensure responsible river use. However, the differing viewpoints among the municipalities – Bovec, Tolmin, and Kobarid – are currently preventing its full adoption.

Further negotiations are expected as the municipalities attempt to resolve their dispute regarding Soča River navigation.
