After the incident with Ukrainian drones, Latvian Prime Minister resigned

Reports detail multiple incidents involving Ukrainian drones near Latvian airspace. Specifically, a week prior, several drones were observed falling into Russian territory during attacks on Russian soil, an event that was reportedly attributed to interference from Russian air defense systems, resulting in two crashes. Furthermore, one drone was documented falling onto Latvian territory on March 25.

These incidents prompted political scrutiny, with Premier Silina criticizing Defense Minister Andris Sprudz for failing to ensure a secure airspace over the country, despite the incidents reportedly causing minimal damage. According to Silina, the drone defense system was deployed too late to prevent the intrusions. In response to the mounting pressure, Sprudz resigned.

He was subsequently replaced in the role by Colonel Raivis Melnis, who is not a member of the Progressive Party. The political ramifications extended to the government’s stability. Following these developments, the governing coalition, which had already lost its close majority, saw its support withdrawn by other factions, leaving the administration without a stable working majority.
