Anniversary Celebrations to Honor Slovenia’s Independence and National Unity
Slovenia’s 35th anniversary of independence and sovereignty will be marked as a tribute to the nation and the courage of those who secured it, according to Sebastjan Jeretič, Director of the Government Communication Office. The celebrations aim to rekindle a sense of national unity, emphasizing the historical circumstances that enabled Slovenia’s statehood. Jeretič highlighted the importance of remembering the period “which allowed us to achieve our statehood,” noting a desire to revive the foundational national unity established at the end of the 1980s.
He expressed concern that this sense of unity has diminished over time. “Future generations should achieve the same fundamental national unity as we have successfully built,” Jeretič stated at a press conference. He underscored the need for mutual understanding and cooperation, stating, “Regardless of all the differences between us, we must live together and therefore we must also learn how to make this our mutuality.”
Following this sentiment, the coordinating committee for state celebrations and events has determined that this aspiration will be realized through the planned commemorations.
The focus remains on honoring Slovenia’s past while fostering a renewed sense of national identity.
