Former Police General Director Accused of Interfering with Trade Union Communications

Retired police official Anton Olaj is facing accusations of attempting to exert control over trade union communications while serving as the general director of the police under the government of Janez Janša. The allegations, detailed in an indictment, center around actions taken between March 13, 2020, and June 1, 2022, when he held the position. The indictment claims Olaj interfered with the ability of the Police Union of Slovenia (SPS) and the Police Union of Slovenia (PSS) to disseminate information to their members.

Specifically, the unions were prevented from independently publishing messages on the police’s internal website (intranet). Following October 22, 2021, all union communications required direct submission to Olaj for review. Furthermore, Olaj mandated that all trade union documents undergo pre-publication scrutiny by the police’s ethics and integrity committee.

This committee was tasked with assessing the content of union messages to determine their suitability for public dissemination. The actions reportedly restricted the operational autonomy of the police union and raised concerns about potential censorship. The case involved the police and the union relationship.
