Couple Dies on South American Expedition After Illness

St. Helena – Leo Schilperoord, 70, and his wife, Mirjam Schilperoord, 69, died while on a 10-month voyage through South America aboard the MV Hondius. The couple, who had been traveling together, began exhibiting symptoms of illness on April 1st, approximately a week after embarking.

Initial symptoms included a high fever, persistent headaches, stomach pain, and diarrhea. Medical staff administered treatment, but the condition proved fatal. Mr.

Schilperoord passed away on the ship. Due to logistical constraints, the body was not retrieved until the MV Hondius arrived at St. Helena after 14 days.

Tragically, Mrs. Schilperoord succumbed to her illness in the island’s hospital a few days later. The Frenchwoman accompanying the expedition team is currently in critical condition and receiving intensive care.
