El Anouni referenced the United Nations Security Council Resolution 478 from 1980, which had previously urged all nations maintaining diplomatic missions in Jerusalem to withdraw them from the city.
In alignment with established international agreements, the majority of countries maintain their diplomatic missions in Tel Aviv, Israel. However, the situation regarding Jerusalem differs, as currently, no EU member state operates a diplomatic mission within the city. This contrasts with past considerations, such as Hungary’s former plan to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem under the administration of Viktor Orbán.
The stated adherence to international consensus suggests a unified policy approach across the bloc. By respecting the existing framework, the EU aims to maintain diplomatic neutrality while the complex political status of Jerusalem remains unresolved.
