Velenje firefighters conducted an inspection of the Ložnica stream, covering a stretch of over two kilometers, following reports of a significant death of fish. This incident marks a new occurrence of aquatic mortality in the region. The event draws a comparison to a previous incident that occurred several days prior near Ptuj, where a substantial 28-ton death of trout was reported at a local fish farm.
However, authorities noted a distinct difference in the cause of the current mortality event. According to the regional alert center Celje, the cause of the fish die-off in the Ložnica stream is attributed to severe drought conditions. This contrasts sharply with the previous incident near Ptuj, which was linked to water pollution.
In response to the discovery, the firefighters collaborated with representatives from the Šempeter fishing family to investigate the stream’s condition. The regional alert center subsequently notified all relevant services regarding the findings. The investigation confirms that while significant fish mortality has been observed, the primary contributing factor in this instance is environmental stress stemming from low water levels and drought.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely to assess the impact on the local aquatic ecosystem. The findings have prompted heightened awareness among local environmental agencies regarding the vulnerability of river life to changing hydrological patterns.
