Interior Minister Matoz Adjusts Border Control Strategy Ahead of Summer
Ljubljana – Interior Minister Franci Matoz has outlined the government’s revised approach to border security in Slovenia, particularly in the context of upcoming summer travel periods. Speaking in an interview, Matoz clarified a shift in strategy regarding police presence at Slovenian-Croatian border crossings. The government has decided to reduce the number of police officers stationed at these crossings, citing the current system’s ineffectiveness.
Matoz explained that illegal border crossings primarily occur along what he refers to as the “so-called green border,” indicating a different area of concern. This adjustment is intended to streamline passenger flow across the border, a key consideration during periods of increased road traffic. This shift aligns with the implementation of the Migration Pact, which established stricter regulations following its activation in June.
Furthermore, Matoz highlighted the National Assembly’s recent adoption of a law concerning the Eurodac system. This system will facilitate biometric identification of migrants. Prime Minister Janez Janša reportedly stated, “The end of social tourism,” reflecting the government’s broader strategy.
The focus remains on managing migration flows and utilizing technological advancements at border crossings.
