The Silver Thread Association has issued a detailed appeal to Prime Minister Robert Golob and the relevant minister, urging immediate enhancements to the long-term care system. They highlight the long-term care act as a significant accomplishment, yet acknowledge substantial challenges in its execution. A primary concern is the disparity in care costs experienced by residents.
Specifically, individuals residing in elderly care homes face unequal treatment. It’s possible for two residents with identical care needs to share a room, however, their financial contributions differ considerably. Those admitted before December 1, 2025, are typically charged solely for accommodation and sustenance.
Conversely, newer residents are obligated to cover the complete cost of services. Data from January 2026 indicates that at least 1,207 individuals were affected by this inconsistent system. Furthermore, approximately 12 care homes, housing around 2,000 residents, failed to provide any data regarding this issue.
This highlights the urgent need for a more equitable and transparent long-term care approach.
