Living with a narcissist: Outwardly perfect, inwardly different

“When we realize that we are not speaking what we feel, that we are constantly walking on our toes and adjusting ourselves to someone else, it is a big alarm,” says Aleksandra Kocmut, who believes that it is often the most difficult to recognize a narcissistic person when they are closest to you. “The longer one person is close to us, the easier it is to recognize them. The closer we are, the harder it is to recognize them, because we are emotionally very attached to them,” she explains.

If it is a colleague or acquaintance, she believes we will be quicker to notice that something is wrong, but it is quite different when it is a partner, parent or even a child. According to her, the first signs of an unhealthy relationship often do not show up in the other person, but in ourselves. She also admits that it took her years to understand what kind of relationship she was living in.

One of the reasons is that victims often do not realize they are living in a toxic relationship until they are close to the person.
