Ivan Šprajc’s team discovered a hitherto unknown Mayan city on the Yucatan Peninsula

Lost Mayan City ‘Minanbe’ Discovered in Mexican Biosphere

A previously unknown Mayan city has been discovered within the Calakmul biosphere in the Mexican state of Campeche, according to the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU). The site, named “Minanbe,” meaning ‘no path’ or ‘no way,’ remained hidden for over 1,000 years due to dense jungle vegetation. The discovery highlights the challenges of accessing remote archaeological locations.

According to archaeoastronomer and head of the Institute of Anthropological and Spatial Studies, Ivan Šprajc, the name aptly reflects the difficulty encountered during the exploration. The area, which is part of a protected biosphere and national park, presented no established paths or causeways, necessitating researchers to create their own access route. The Mayan city, which was completely covered by the jungle, has remained undisturbed for centuries, shielding it from looters and casual observation.

Researchers believe the site offers valuable insights into the civilization’s history and urban development. Further investigation is planned to fully assess the extent and significance of this newly discovered Mayan site.
