Swedish Prison Preparing for First Juvenile Inmates
Preparations are underway at H department, the largest Swedish prison, for the arrival of the first juvenile prisoners in its 60-year history. Significant changes are being implemented to accommodate the new inmates. New furniture has been ordered, and existing beds previously allocated to adult double cells have been removed.
Construction is also commencing on new classrooms, and the prison walls are scheduled for repainting, transitioning from red to a light green color scheme. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer stated that Sweden is confronting “exceptional circumstances” due to the escalating violence associated with criminal gangs. Over the past decade, networks involved in drug trafficking, sophisticated fraud, and robberies have grown considerably, according to reports by The Guardian.
However, not all stakeholders support the arrangement. Jacques Mwepu, Director of the Kumla prison, has expressed opposition to the new initiative. Like many experts, he maintains that children are not suitable for incarceration within a prison setting.
Despite his reservations, Mr. Mwepu acknowledges the decision has been made and is focused on the successful implementation of the changes within the prison. The arrival marks a significant shift in the institution’s operations.
