Rare Gun from “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly” Found During Cemetery Restoration

A significant prop from Sergio Leone’s iconic 1966 film, “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly,” has been located during a restoration project near Burgos, Spain. The discovery was made by volunteers associated with the Sad Hill cultural association, who were researching the film in preparation for its 60th-anniversary celebration slated for the end of this year. The gun, a 75-millimeter Whitworth rifle manufactured in Manchester in 1873, was one of several antique weapons provided to Leone’s production team by the Spanish army.

The gun was notably used in the film’s opening scene, where Clint Eastwood casually ignited it with a cigar. The volunteers initially located the gun after finding a reference to it in the film’s script. Their efforts align with a broader initiative to preserve the cemetery constructed specifically for the filming of “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly.” The find highlights the enduring legacy of this landmark spaghetti western and the meticulous attention to detail employed by director Sergio Leone.

The discovery underscores the importance of preserving cinematic history and the impact of Clint Eastwood’s performance in the bad western.
