The purchase of a used vehicle by the Ministry of Agriculture has drawn public scrutiny regarding the spending of the government. Specifically, the minister of Agriculture acquired a used Volkswagen Tayron in 2025. According to official figures, the car had covered 28,000 kilometers and was purchased for €39,500.
The Ministry stated that the minister would receive €740 in bonuses for the vehicle, an amount that is stipulated by law to decrease by 15 percent annually. The minister’s team provided justification for the used vehicle acquisition, citing the need for a robust car capable of handling extensive field use. This purchase follows a similar procurement by the previous minister, Mateja Čalušič, who acquired a Volkswagen Touareg in 2019 for €44,000.
However, details regarding the necessity of this specific purchase remain unclear. The Ministry has not disclosed the reasons why the previously utilized vehicle was deemed inadequate for the current minister’s fieldwork. Notably, the acquired Tayron model features seven seating positions, while the minister has six.
The transaction has prompted questions regarding the necessity and cost-effectiveness of government vehicle acquisitions for ministerial duties.
