‘I cried before the start, and laughed during the ride’

Slovenian skiing star Ilka Štuhec concluded her illustrious career at the final downhill race of last season, securing 17th place. Although the outcome was disappointing, the Maribor-based racer savored the concluding moment, a complex blend of feelings. “It proved challenging to manage my emotions,” she admitted.

“At the start, I was positioned ahead of schedule, allowing me time to listen to my preferred music and shed a few tears. During the ride, I experienced typical, focused nervousness.”

Štuhec’s performance wasn’t perfect, but she expressed no regrets. “I have no cause for complaint,” she stated.

The athlete holds a unique place in Slovenian skiing history, being the only woman to claim two consecutive world downhill championships in 2017 and 2019. She amassed a remarkable record of 251 elite competitions, with seven victories in the demanding downhill discipline – the highest number in the nation’s history. “Despite not being satisfied with my result, I am immensely proud,” Štuhec declared.

“I’ve never felt such profound happiness in my life.”
