Milk Bank in Slovenia saves the most vulnerable newborns

Ljubljana Maternity Hospital Launches Slovenia’s First Milk Bank

Ljubljana Maternity Hospital has established Slovenia’s inaugural milk bank, providing a vital resource for newborns unable to be exclusively breastfed. The initiative supports Luka Androjna and his firstborn, who were both born prematurely three months ago, alongside other young parents. “We were very happy with the arrival of our child,” stated Luka Androjna.

“We were aware of the benefits of mother’s milk compared to formula, but were unaware of the milk bank’s existence.”

The milk bank, a small and independent department within the hospital, ensures newborns lacking access to breast milk receive a secure and doctor-prescribed alternative. Milk is carefully collected and portioned for distribution. Marta Borštnar, the lactation and breastfeeding counselor, explains, “We collect donated milk in a designated cupboard, maintaining precise individual portions.”

Established three years prior, the bank operates by accepting donated milk, which is then rigorously assessed and prepared for infants who require supplemental feeding.

This innovative approach expands access to essential nourishment for vulnerable newborns, solidifying the hospital’s commitment to optimal infant care.
