Hvar in Flames: Fire has covered 200 hectares of land

On Saturday afternoon, the Jelsa area was alerted to a significant fire at a local waste dump. Following the initial report, a standby team was immediately dispatched to manage the escalating situation. Due to the considerable scale of the blaze, the Croatian fire service mobilized all available resources from the island.

The response effort included personnel, initially two Canadians, with subsequent reinforcements arriving to assist the teams. According to statements released by the firefighters on Saturday evening, the concerted efforts of the crews helped bring the fire under control to a degree. At one point, the fire posed a threat to nearby residences, although the structures were largely protected by the efforts of the responding teams.

The official assessment provided by the Croatian fire service detailed the resulting damage. Specifically, two abandoned buildings were completely consumed by the fire, and two villas sustained damage. Additionally, several vineyards were reported as having burned.

The coordinated response by the firefighters highlights the extensive effort required to manage the uncontrolled blaze throughout the day. The incident underscores the community’s reliance on emergency services during such large-scale environmental hazards.
