He woke up with a bat on his face, then died from rabies

According to a report published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Monday, an incident involving a bat occurred during a visit to a cabin in northern Ontario in 2024. The boy reportedly awoke after noticing the bat on his face. He subsequently pushed the animal away.

His father secured the bat in a jar and released it into the wild. Because there were no visible bite marks, and the bat did not exhibit unusual or aggressive behavior, the boy’s parents opted not to seek immediate medical attention. However, nineteen days after the initial encounter, the boy began experiencing symptoms including tingling and numbness on the right side of his face.

This was followed by swelling of the face and a subsequent loss of appetite. Four days after these symptoms manifested, he received medication at an emergency medical facility. The initial assessment of his condition was noted as not life-threatening.

The report details the timeline from the initial contact with the wildlife to the delayed onset of neurological symptoms. The progression from a seemingly minor incident—where the father safely managed the bat—to the development of localized facial symptoms underscores the clinical observation regarding potential delayed complications. The medical care received addressed the evolving nature of the symptoms observed on his face.
