‘From the perspective of bare survival, it is easier to be a musician in Slovenia than in the Netherlands’

Musician Details Journey into Jazz Following Saxophone Roots

The musician discussed what initially drew him to jazz music, detailing a path shaped by his early musical experiences. He explained that his attraction began while playing saxophone in various orchestras and bands during his youth. A key element of his interest was observing the skill of improvisation – the ability for musicians to spontaneously create melodies within the performance.

“There was something magical about it,” he stated, “someone could pull melodies out of their sleeves at the moment, which were perfect for that moment.” He noted that if he had chosen to play guitar, he likely would have been drawn to genres like rock or metal, as the saxophone often served a more decorative role within those bands. A specific memory highlighted his early exposure to jazz was a 1996 concert featuring the band Dog Eat Dog at the Tivoli Hall in Ljubljana, where a saxophonist had limited solo opportunities. Later, his involvement with the Bulba Sao band, which blended instrumental funk with metal, further solidified his musical interests.

Despite initially intending to pursue metal or rock music upon entering university, the foundational influence of jazz remained a significant factor in his musical journey.
