On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, personnel from NLZOH Nova Gorica collected water samples from the Vipava River at designated locations within the Miren-Kostanjevica municipality to assess its current water quality. The analysis focused on both microbiological and chemical parameters. The microbiological testing revealed a violation of established limit values for the bacterium Escherichia coli (E.
coli) specifically at the Bilja bend. Conversely, the samples taken from other monitoring points—Šelo, Mlin, and Grabec—registered levels well below acceptable limits. Due to the presence of elevated E.
coli levels at the Bilja bend, authorities have advised against recreational swimming in that specific area of the river. E. coli serves as a primary indicator for the potential presence of dangerous intestinal pathogens and viruses within the water supply.
The monitoring results underscore the general caution advised regarding contact with natural bodies of water. Both swimming pools and natural river areas are subject to strict regulatory guidelines regarding water safety. Direct contact with or consumption of water exhibiting elevated levels of these bacteria poses a potential risk of gastrointestinal illness, such as diarrhea.
