Main changes to the 2026/2027 Game Rules: Measures to control the pace of the game and time loss Following the successful introduction of an eight-second limit for goalkeepers in controlling the ball with their hands last year (including a visual five-second countdown), IFAB approved an additional set of measures aimed at further reducing both the number and duration of interruptions. These measures are also intended to maintain the flow and pace.
