‘I am not a racist, but…’, Serbian commentator’s apology

Radet Bogdanović, a former Yugoslavian national football player, sparked widespread controversy following a comment regarding Belgian player Nathan Ngoy’s red card. During a discussion of the incident, where Ngoy attempted a risky pass and conceded a foul against Mehdie Taremi, Bogdanović stated, “I am not a racist, but blacks simply do not have enough concentration to play for more than 60 minutes.”

The remarks were immediately and overwhelmingly labeled as racist by the football community. Bogdanović’s comments followed Ngoy’s awkward attempt to pass to his goalkeeper, resulting in a missed opportunity and a subsequent foul.

Adding to the controversy, Bogdanović subsequently stated, “Believe me, I am also a racist.”

The reaction within Serbia and the broader football public was swift and critical. Despite his assertion, the comments generated significant justified concern and criticism. The incident highlights ongoing debates surrounding discriminatory language and its impact within the sport.

The statement underscores the importance of responsible commentary and the need to avoid generalizations based on race.
