A significant fire incident occurred between the villages of Blato and Smokvica on the island of Korčula, resulting in the burning of around 900 hectares of land. The affected area comprised grass, low vegetation, scrub, and pine forest, according to the Croatian Fire Brigade (HVZ). On Sunday, efforts to control the blaze involved approximately 200 firefighters, supported by about 50 fire engines, three canadairs, and air tractors.
The fire spread over a distance exceeding four kilometers, necessitating the arrival of personnel from other Croatian counties. Stjepan Simović, the mayor of the municipality, stated on Friday that while the night was calm and the situation was improving, vigilance remained necessary due to residual smoke. He noted that the air tractor would be utilized to extinguish any potential fires in difficult-to-reach terrain.
Furthermore, he confirmed that some units had been dispatched to Mljet, indicating a broader response effort. These incidents were part of a series of fire outbreaks across Croatia between Friday and Sunday evening, during which numerous fires were successfully extinguished.
