Firefighting efforts in the Bohinj area required significant external assistance due to the inaccessible nature of the blaze’s origin. According to Silvo Režek of the volunteer firefighting association (PGD) Bohinjska Bistrica, the complexity of the location necessitated calling in specialized resources. Currently, the operation is supported by two Air Tractor units, alongside crucial assistance from the air police unit’s helicopter and the mountain rescue service of Bohinj.
Režek noted that the area surrounding Lake Bohinj is experiencing heavy visitor traffic, requiring the deployment of numerous firefighters and water rescue units to ensure public safety. To facilitate firefighting operations, only a section of the lake has been restricted, allowing aircraft safe access for water collection. He differentiated the current incident from typical karst fires, explaining that this particular blaze is a subsurface fire.
This type of fire spreads rapidly underground and does not generate intense heat. The coordination of resources—including specialized air support—is proving very vital in containing the spread. Authorities are maintaining a high level of vigilance to manage both the natural hazard and the significant number of people present near the lake.
The combined efforts of ground crews and the robust air support are central to mitigating the risks posed by this subterranean fire.
