French authorities have reported significant evacuations following a major fire in the western part of the country, situated west of Bordeaux. To date, 220,000 individuals have been evacuated, with an additional 50,000 people evacuated following subsequent calls for mandatory evacuation. Consequently, authorities have closed a 60-kilometer stretch of the highway connecting Bordeaux to the Spanish border. Furthermore, SNCF, the national railway company, has suspended all rail traffic south of the Bordeaux area. In an interview published today, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez estimated that controlling the fire in the Gironde department will be a protracted effort.
