As of the latest reports, 1,406 cases of ebola have been confirmed across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since the epidemic was declared on May 15. According to INSP, the current mortality rate associated with the outbreak stands at 31%. Health authorities note that accurately assessing the full scope of the epidemic remains challenging.
The outbreak originated primarily in the northeastern province of Ituri, which accounted for 83% of the reported fatalities. From this epicenter, the virus has spread across several other DRC provinces and has also reached neighboring Uganda. In Uganda, twenty infections and two deaths have been confirmed to date.
A recent development involved a case reported in Kisangani, a major city in the northeast of the country with a population of 1.5 million. This location is approximately 600 kilometers from the initial outbreak site in Ituri. Health officials reported that the infection was traced to a 24-year-old pregnant woman who was reportedly transported covertly by motorcycle from the health zone in Ituri to Kisangani.
The continuous spread underscores the complexity of containing the virus. Monitoring efforts are focused on tracking transmission vectors, as evidenced by the movement of the infected individual between distant health zones. These ongoing developments necessitate sustained surveillance to manage the ongoing public health crisis related to ebola infections.
