New Drug Approved for Pediatric Muscular Dystrophy Treatment
A new drug has been approved for the treatment of children aged six and over with muscular dystrophy who are still ambulatory. The approval follows a recommendation from the clinical department for pediatric, adolescent and developmental neurology at the University Clinical Center Ljubljana. Treatment will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the commission, ensuring appropriate patient selection.
The decision marks a significant step forward in managing the condition. The Association of Dušena Muscular Dystrophy Slovenia has welcomed the drug’s inclusion on the positive list. President Sanja Kogelnik stated that the approval represents the culmination of extensive advocacy efforts.
“This decision will change the lives of families who will now have a new opportunity,” Kogelnik wrote in a press release. “We hope that the drug will help children and families living with this difficult disease to the greatest extent possible.”
The approval allows for the potential of improved outcomes for individuals affected by muscular dystrophy, offering a new therapeutic option alongside corticosteroids, as determined by medical professionals. Further details regarding the drug’s administration and specific patient criteria will be released by the clinical department.
