Bolivia has been rocked by mass protests for the second week, blocking roads across the country and turning the capital city of La Paz into a scene of violent clashes between protesters and police, The Guardian reports. This is the most serious test for the center-right government of President Rodrigo Paz Pereyra, who has been in power for just six months, after breaking the rule of almost twenty years of rule by the left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). Protests have claimed four lives, dozens of injuries and caused more than 40 roadblocks.
Some have reportedly died because they did not receive medical care in time due to the blockades. Demonstrators are demanding the resignation of the president, who, however, rejects violence and emphasizes that he will not talk to “vandals.” Rodrigo Paz Pereira is a former police officer and a member of the MAS party.
