China Condemns EU Sanctions Targeting Chinese Companies in Russia Package
Beijing has strongly criticized the European Union’s decision to incorporate several Chinese entities into the 20th package of sanctions targeting Russia, as reported by Politico. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce views the move as a unilateral and unjustified action by the EU, demanding immediate removal of the affected companies. China asserted that it will implement retaliatory measures to safeguard its national interests.
A statement from Beijing indicated that “the EU would bear all the consequences” of this action. The new sanctions package, approved following the resolution of a dispute concerning the Družba oil pipeline supplying Central Europe, expands restrictions on the Russian financial sector. Primarily, several Russian banks are being excluded from operations within the euro zone and access to the EU’s internal market.
This development follows a period of negotiation and the lifting of Hungarian and Slovakian vetoes. China has repeatedly expressed concerns regarding the EU’s approach to sanctions against Russia. The Chinese government maintains its position that the inclusion of chinese firms is detrimental and will have repercussions.
