Slovenian Biologist Demonstrates Spider Expertise in Koseški Barjar
Dr. Tomi Trilar, a biologist from the Slovenian Museum of Natural History, has dedicated over three decades to the study of spiders. He frequently conducts fieldwork, and possesses no apprehension regarding spiders, provided he has been vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis.
Trilar’s expertise in arachnids – animals belonging to the arachnid order – is widely recognized. During a recent visit to the Koseški barjar, a location in Ljubljana considered one of Slovenia’s hotspots for spider diversity, Dr. Trilar demonstrated his techniques.
He utilized a white cloth attached to a stick to gently encourage spiders to move into the dry undergrowth. Within minutes, several spider larvae and a male spider were successfully collected onto the cloth. “No, spiders do not fall from trees,” Trilar stated, highlighting a common misconception.
His research contributes significantly to the understanding of these often-misunderstood creatures. The Koseški barjar, a key research site, offers a rich environment for observing and studying the diverse spider populations found within Slovenia.
